What is a Just Right book?
To become better readers, students must read "Just Right" books to challenge themselves to use reading strategies yet still understand what they are reading. When choosing books to read at home or school ask yourself:

IS THIS THE RIGHT BOOK FOR YOU?

Ask yourself these questions. If your answer is YES, the book is probably:

Too Easy
  1. Have you read it lots of times before?
  2. Do you understand the story very well?
  3. Do you know almost every word?
  4. Can you read it smoothly?
Just Right

  1. Is the book new to you?
  2. Do you understand a lot of the book?
  3.  Are there just a few words a page you don't know?
  4. When you read, are some places smooth and some choppy?
Too Hard
  1. Are there more than 5 words on a page you don't know?
  2. Are you confused about what is happening in most of  this book?
  3. When you read, does it sound pretty choppy?
  4. Is everyone else busy and unable to help you?

The Writing Process
Good writers follow a Writing Process. They write many drafts before they have a finished product. Writers understand that they must reread and revise before they come up with a "perfect" product. Follow these easy steps so your writing can be full of wonderous words.
  1. Prewriting/Brainstorm Organize your notes and ideas for your topic
  2. Rough Draft Form you notes and ideas into sentence that make paragraphs
  3. Revise Change the order or words to improve flow and make your writing more interesting
  4. Proofread/Edit Read over your writing to check for spelling and grammar errors
  5. Publish Type or rewrite in your neatest handwriting to share with others
